Weekly News
Born in Japan, Ultimo Dragon has lived for the last 16 years in Mexico City. He didn’t let borders keep him from becoming a worldwide cruiserweight phenomenon.
And the No. 1 goal he has left in sports entertainment is equally global: he wants to wrestle in the international mecca of sports entertainment, Madison Square Garden.
SmackDown! will be taped at the Garden in two weeks, on Tuesday, June 24. Dragon, who recently signed a contract with WWE and has wrestled in non-televised matches for the last few weeks, hopes and prays that he’ll make his TV debut that night.
“I’m very, very happy to be here,” Dragon, who speaks Japanese, Spanish and English, told WWE.com recently. “Wrestling at Madison Square Garden is my dream. Madison Square Garden is an icon in the wrestling business. Working in WWE is my dream too.”
Dragon said he grew up watching the original Tiger Mask defend the World Wrestling Federation Junior Heavyweight Championship all across the world, including at the Garden.
“Then, for me, American wrestling became No. 1 in the world,” he said.
Dragon began his quest to wrestle in America, and specifically at the Garden, when he was 18.
Although various sources credit New Japan Pro Wrestling’s Antonio Inoki and Yoshiaki Fujimara for training Dragon, Ultimo himself credits NJPW’s Kotetsu Yamamoto. Soon after being trained, Dragon wrestled for New Japan with limited success. At age 20, he moved to Mexico City, thinking that he was too small to compete in his native country.
His career took off. After gaining experience and notoriety in Mexico, he traveled back and forth from Mexico to Japan repeatedly throughout the early to mid-1990s, winning numerous titles in the process. By 1996, he was also wrestling in WCW. On Dec. 29 of that year, he defeated current WWE agent Dean Malenko for the WCW (now WWE) Cruiserweight Championship. At that point, he held nine championships at the same time; he’s possibly the only competitor in history who can claim such a feat.
Dragon went on to become a two-time WCW Cruiserweight Champion (he also beat Eddie Guerrero for the title) and a two-time WCW Television Champion.
Then, in 1998, his career came to a screeching halt after a botched surgery in Atlanta on his left elbow.
“It was very simple surgery, only to clean up bone chips,” Dragon said.
But the doctor hit his median nerve, which caused pain, numbness and weakening in his left arm and hand.
WWE is about to launch a major fundraising initiative, spearheaded by Shawn Michaels, to support the families of soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
On Monday, June 23 -- several hours before RAW at Madison Square Garden -- the Heartbreak Kid, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Goldberg, Triple H, Kevin Nash, Ric Flair and Trish Stratus will be signing autographs for a nominal fee at FYE in New York City’s Rockefeller Center.
All proceeds from that signing -- and from six subsequent autograph sessions in cities across the U.S. -- will go to the Armed Forces Family Scholarship and Assistance Fund (AFFSAF), which provides scholarships for higher education of children of all fallen personnel in the Iraqi and Afghan war operations.
Beginning next week, fans can stop by the Rockefeller Center FYE and, for , receive a specially produced WrestleMania XX 11-by-17 poster and a wristband. Those fans can return on June 23 with the poster and the wristband and have the poster signed by the seven Superstars. Posters, if still available, can also be purchased on the day of the signing.
Because this is a charity event, the Superstars at the autograph session -- scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. -- will only be signing the poster.
Signings are also currently being planned at FYE stores in Buffalo, N.Y. (June 30); Indianapolis (July 14); Los Angeles (July 21); the Denver/Colorado Springs area (July 28); Moline, Ill. (Aug. 11); and New Orleans (Sept. 1). More details will be released on those events as they are finalized.
HBK came up with the idea for the fundraisers. In a telephone interview on Wednesday, the Heartbreak Kid, currently battling the stomach flu, said, “I was just watching FOX News one day. At that point, I think there were about 126 military personnel who had died in the war. ... I thought, ‘Geez, we ought to be about to do something (to help).’
“Being from a military family, I’m a huge patriot. Whether you agree with the war or you don’t, it doesn’t matter. You support the people who go and fight for you.”
Michaels and a friend of his got in touch with WWE to start the planning process. He wanted to make the fundraisers something special.
“I told (WWE officials) that I didn’t want it to be just something with a bunch of mid-card folks signing autograph mats,” he said. “They said, ‘If you want big-name people, you’re going to have to ask them.’”
Michaels did just that.
It was announced on RAW last night that Freddie Blassie had passed away at the age of 85. Blassie had been ill for quite some time with both heart and kidney trouble (he lost one of his kidneys in 1965) and had been in hospital in West Chester County, New York the past week.

The 7-foot Australian is known to be aggressive even when hes just working out in the ring before arena doors open he was practicing at the May 13 SmackDown! taping in Baltimore. It was at that same event that Chavo Guerrero was injured.

Thank you, Nature Boy
by Spike Dudley
May 28, 2003
Every once in a while, a moment comes along that just flat-out moves us. It doesn't matter if you are a WWE Superstar, a fan, a backstage technician or the guy who sweeps out the seats after the show. During RAW on May 19, 2003, in Greenville, S.C., I was lucky enough to take part in a truly remarkable tribute to the legendary Ric Flair.
RAW's main event pitted World Champion Triple H vs. his mentor, Ric Flair. I don't have to tell anyone how special the night was. Ric had several promos throughout the show that brought back memories of his NWA World Championship glory days. He started the night unsure, lacking confidence. Next we saw Shawn Michaels asking a truly emotional Flair, "Where is the Nature Boy?" Ric, with tears in his eyes, had no answer for Michaels. Flair returned later in the show to finish the promos with a thunderous speech to Triple H, reminding the champ that Flair wrestled thousands of nights and never asked for a night off, especially in his hometown. Ric went on to have a tremendous match against HHH and came within a heartbeat of dethroning the Game. RAW went off the air that night with all of the fans on their feet, giving Flair a standing ovation for his night's performance.
I don't think it's necessary for me to list Ric Flair's credentials. From his NWA/ WCW World Title reigns to his WWE return, Flair is the epitome of professionalism, and I really believe every fan knows this. I've been a fan my whole life, and I know my "wrestling world" was rocked the first time I saw Ric Flair wrestle live. It happened to be the 1992 Royal Rumble at the Knickerbocker Arena in Albany, N.Y. Flair entered the Rumble third and wrestled over an hour, outlasting 29 other wrestlers to win the WWE Championship. I became a diehard Flair fan after that magical night.
So let's just say it's a given that Ric is one of the best ever and everyone knows it. What you can't know about him, without knowing him personally, is what a truly class act he is. The first time I had the honor of shaking hands with the man, he was the most humble person I've ever met. Ric Flair actually thanked me for welcoming him back to the WWE locker room. Imagine that! Ric Flair thanking Spike Dudley! Class just oozes out of this guy.
Ric loves the wrestling business. In the twilight of his career, when he could easily retire and sit around the pool with his family, he is still on the road, entertaining the fans and leading the Superstars of WWE.

When Sable and WWE parted ways in 1999, nobody -- least of all Sable -- ever thought she would return. But, as the saying goes, "never say never" when it comes to WWE. The blonde bombshell, former model and Playboy cover girl made her shocking comeback just days after WrestleMania XIX.
As Sable herself pointed out the night of her return, even four years after departing, the men still come to see her, and the women still want to be her. In 1999, in fact, men and women alike clamored to see her -- nude -- when she became the first WWE Diva to pose in Playboy. Sable's edition turned out to be the fastest selling ever. It was so demanded, in fact, the Playboy invited her back for a second shoot, making her the first woman to ever grace the cover of Playboy twice in the same year. She also appeared twice that year on the cover of TV Guide.
Since she was last seen on WWE television, Sable has concentrated on acting. She starred in the 2001 feature film "Corky Romano," alongside "Saturday Night Live" funnyman Chris Kattan. She guest starred on the series "Relic Hunter." And she appeared on numerous talk shows, from "The Tonight Show," to "Politically Incorrect" to the "Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn."
